The campaign work for the Autism Society of America coincided with the 60th anniversary of their founding. A lot has changed in 60 years, and the current climate of autism awareness and advocacy has never been challenged as much as it has been under the current administration. That cultural insight led us to create a campaign that shined a spotlight on all the beautiful attributes that can be found on the autism spectrum, and use that wide range to educate and celebrate the community.
Autism Is ___ was our big idea. A simple, modular formula that the Autism Society could modify and personalize up and down their funnel, from major market placements to local television appearances, from social media to conferences and advocacy meetings, all the way down to swag, business cards, and below-the-line marketing materials.
Tonally, when we added definitions, we were careful not to be pandering, insensitive, flippant, or apologetic, so each word had to inherently lead into a story, anecdote, or message that laddered up to the idea that autism is a lot of beautiful things.
In the end, our campaign launched not only to wide acclaim creatively, but the work itself did exactly what it was supposed to. It worked.
